Our Day in a Nutshell



 Period One - CENTRES
Today was Day 4 of Cycle 6 centres.  All centre activities are due on November 2

Period Two - FRENCH 6A
Les nombres tests were returned to students.  Students wrapped up the Les nombres unit with some activities from the classroom blog, an oral assessment and the final pages of the booklet.

Period Three - Math 6
1.  Bell work and conditioning kicked off our class.
2.  Order of operations assignments that were handed in on Friday were returned and filed in binders.
3. Page 4 of the order of operations booklet was corrected together.  Students were challenged to do page 5 (uses exponents) as this is a level 4 questions.
4. Students worked through some white board activities looking at whether their calculators do order of operations, where to place brackets so number sentences are true and solving situational problems using order of operations.
5.  Homework Book 8 was assigned for homework.

Period Four - 6B SOCIAL
1.  Geography skills - students had time to complete their assignment on landforms using the orange atlas.
2.  Students were given a landform dictionary assignment. More class time will be given for this next class.

 Period One - CENTRES
Today was Day 3 of Cycle 6 centres.  All centre activities are due on November 2

Period Two - THE MONKEY'S PAW
Students were treated to the grade 8 production of the  Monkey's Paw.  Well done grade 8!

Period Three - Math 6
Today was a regroup class.  Students pulled assessments for their portfolios and filed their unit on multiples and factors.  Page 1-3 of the order of operations booklet was corrected together.  Students were asked to do their corrections and then complete page 4 of the booklet.  Students also handed in their Extra Practice 7 which was due.

Period Four - 6A SOCIAL
1.  Geography skills - students had time to complete their assignment on landforms using the orange atlas.
2.  Students were given a landform dictionary assignment. More class time will be given for this next class.

Period Two - FRENCH/HEALTH
"Les Nombres" continues.....  students corrected the "Les Nombres" page that was assigned for homework.  They prepared for their test tomorrow.

Period Three - Math 6
Bell work and a mad minute kicked off the class.
Tests that were written yesterday were returned and students filed their work from their outcome in their folders.  They also chose some assessment pieces to share at interviews in mid-November.
Our next outcome (order of operations) was introduced.  Students learned BEDMAS.

Period Four - Social 6B
A few questions from the US Election story were corrected together.  This was handed in for further marking.
Students moved onto their next topic in their Interdependence unit - how do geography and climate connect us?  Students identified the geographical and climate features of Evelyn's environment.  No homework was assigned.

Students moved onto their next topic in their Interdependence unit - how do geography and climate connect us?  Students identified the geographical and climate features of Evelyn's environment.  No homework was assigned.

Students wrote their factors and multiples test (N6.2).


Period Four - 6A READING ALOUD(6B had Science with Mrs. Unch)
Students listened to our class read aloud, "LOSER" .  We did not have reading buddies today.

Students prepared for their test on Monday.  Post assessments were returned in a teacher-student conference.  We discussed errors and challenges and celebrated successes! 
A test review was also completed.  An answer key was provided for students to check their answers.

1.  Current Events - students completed the US Election Current Event - it is due next class

Students split into two groups.  One group practised divisibility rules, prime factoraization and factors.  The other group was challenged to find another strategy for finding the factors of a number that were prime and creating a poster of the 3 methods.  They also played a game of Kahoot.

Period Four - 6A\B SOCIAL
1.  Students completed the questions from the case study, "String of Dreams".
2. A current event story and questions on the upcoming US election was assigned.  It is not homework.

"Les Nombres" continues.....  Students practised their numbers.  Students were asked to write out the "Must Know" numbers, we practiced writing numbers and students were assigned a homework page from their "Les Nombres" booklet.  They will have time to complete this next class.

Students handed in their prime and composite homework.
A lesson on prime factorization were taught.  Students learned factor trees and practiced making them on their whiteboards.  No homework was assigned.

Period Four - Social 6B
Border riddles was corrected together. 
We continued our look at how place and culture connect people.  We finished reading the story about Evelyn called "A String of Dreams"  Students then worked on the booklet that corresponds with the story.  There will be some time to work on this on Wednesday.

Period One - ELA
Mythical Creature Research Project was due today.  Students completed a self assessment as part of their assess and reflect outcome.  As well, students completed a final checklist of assignment requirements.  Once this was complete, students shared their papers in small groups. 
Students were introduced to a reading comprehension program called "Read Theory".

Period Two - SOCIAL 6A
Students handed in their assignment on Geographical Terms.
The rest of the class was devoted to finding pictures for their landform dictionary.  Students learned about copying and pasting pictures and text wrapping them into Microsoft Word. No more class time will be provided for this.


Period Three - Math 6
Bell work and a mad minute kicked off the class.
We concluded our study of Order of Operations today.
1)  Students worked on Homework Book 7
2)  Whiteboard math - using order of operations to solve situational problems
3)  Post Assessment

Period Four - 6A READING BUDDIES (6B had Science with Mrs. Unch)

Period Two - FRENCH 6A
Students continued their study of Les Nombres.  Students practiced writing, saying and listening to the numbers.  A video was also shown.  No homework was assigned - students can always work on learning the "must know" numbers as this will be something they will have to know eventually.

Period Three - Math 6
Bell work kicked off the class.
An assessment on factors was given to students.  This assessment stretched their brains to reach for the next level.
Students handed in the multiples review booklet from yesterday.
Prime and Composite numbers were introduced to students.  Anyone that would like extra instruction on this concept (or review factors and multiples) is welcome to watch the following video.

Period Four - 6B SOCIAL
Students spent the first 15 minutes doing currents 4 kids.  We then revisited our unit on Global Interdependence.  Students identified  their roles and responsibilities and the roles and responsibilities of an adult family member.  We began learning about Evelyn, a young girl from Ghana - students will be identifying how place connects them together and how Evelyn's roles are similar to and different from their own.

Our Day in a Nutshell

Period One - ELA
Today was day 3 of Cycle 4 centres. 
All centres are due on Monday, October 17

Period Two - FRENCH 6B
Students continued their study of Les Nombres.  Students practiced writing, saying and listening to the numbers.  They also practiced making and saying large numbers.  No homework was assigned.

Period Three - Math 6
Bell work and a mad minute kicked off the class.
REVIEW CENTRES- students circulated through the following 3 centres
1)  Divisibility rules - student reviewed their divisibility rules for 2,3,4,5,6,9,10 by completing various divisibility mazes.
2)  Multiples - students completed a multiples booklet.  They should have the first 2 pages done for tomorrow. Don't give up on a couple on the second page.  They are tricky.  You may even have to go passed 500 for one of the questions!
3)  Factors - students who had trouble with the factors booklet that was handed in on Friday worked with Mrs. Helmeczi.  The biggest issue is missing some of  the factor pairs when listing all factors of a number.  Students that have mastered the concept worked on some higher level factoring practice on the whiteboards.


Period Four - 6A SOCIAL(6B had Science with Mrs. Unch)
Students spent the first 15 minutes doing currents 4 kids.  We then revisited our unit on Global Interdependence.  Students discussed their roles and responsibilities and then read the case study, "A String of Beads" and compared their roles and responsibilities to those of Evelyn, the young girl in the story.

The following new centre activities were introduced. They will be due on October 20.
1)  Map Skills
2)  Travel Blog - students researched the customs and traditions of the countries they will visit.
3)  Travel Blog - this was a continuation of centre 2
4)  Currents 4 Kids - 8A students worked on their Kinship reading and questions.
5)  Pokot People of Africa - students read the case study on the social organization of this tribe and completed a page of response activities.
6)  Iroquois Kinship - students completed the reading and questions on Iroquois kinship

Students reviewed their knowledge of multiples, factors and divisibility rules playing Kahoot.  This was a great review for all students, identifying that a bit more work is needed.

1.  Class kicked off with "Border Riddles" - this is due on Wednesday
2.  Student finished up their booklet, "How are we all connected?" - they handed in their paragraphs.
3. Students watched a video and discussed the meaning of cultural diversity.  (Being the same and different)

Period One - ELA
Cycle 3 hand in and marking took the first half of class.
Students were introduced to cycle 4 centres and had a mini lesson on to, too and two

Period Two - French 6B/French 6A
6B students got their tests back, practised their oral conversations skills and were introduced to Les Nombres (the numbers).  Students' ability to do a conversation on the spot was impressive.
6A students wrote their saluations test and and then worked on duo lingo.


Period Three - Math 6
Bell work and a mad minute kicked off the class.
Factors
- students corrected their factor rainbows and factor horseshoes
- common factors and greatest common factor were introduced
- students added a reference page to their notebooks
- a worksheet on common factors was assigned as homework

Period Four - 6B Social

Period One - ELA
Mythical Creature Research - students had this period to research their mythical creature.  Students were asked to be thorough in their research.  We will begin writing our paragraphs next writing class.

Period Two - SOCIAL 6A
Oceans of Information was due today - we corrected this together.  Students continued their study of "How Are We Connected?"  Students paired with classmates to discuss their VENN diagrams.  They recorded their discussions in a chart.  Students also learned about Cultural Diversity.


Period Three - Math 6
Bell work and a mad minute kicked off the class.
Divisibility Rules
- students handed in their "Friendly Advice" assignemtn
Factors
- students were introduced to factors today.  They watched a video, and learned two methods for finding the factors of a number (Factor Rainbows and Factor Horseshoes) 
- no homework was assigned

Period Four - 6A READING BUDDIES (6B had Science with Mrs. Unch)
Students had 15 minutes to complete centres and then they listened to our class read aloud.  Students read to their reading buddies at 1:30.

Period Four - 6B SOCIAL
1.  The current event, "Cruising the Northwest Passage" was due today.  This was corrected together as a class.
2. We began our look at "Global Interdependence" or the essential question, "How are we connected with one another?"  Students identified the similarities and differences among cultures and learned the meaning of cultural diversity.
